911 Memorial Site

September 11th, 2001 terrorists crashed two commercial jets into the World Trade Center Buildings. Hours later both building came horrifically crashing down. In its aftermath over 2977 people perished in the collapse. While the process of healing and remembrance began almost immediately, a permanent memorial did not begin until 2006. A dedication of this memorial site was held on September 11th, 2011 and it contains two square reflection ponds with the names of all of those killed on that day etched in the walls of the squares. Those names included those killed in the Pentagon attack and those who perished in a Pennsylvania field. The site also contains green space with lots of tress which is something does not exist in the financial district of New York City.

Each of the square reflection ponds creates a somber feel and mood. Seeing the names of the victims on the wall and realizing the enormity of each square really personifies the tragic lose that occurred on that day. I noticed flowers placed on the wall and thought to myself, were those placed there by a loved one? The flowers are poignant reminder that someone who perished that day is very much missed and loved.
